Secondly -- Thank you Evan for being amazing boyfriend, and never getting upset with me when I had to "throw you under the bus"... several times :)
Here is the story:
Early in September on a Sunday when I was getting ready for church/meet Evan when I received a phone call from Dan, who is currently living in Montana. Dan asked me what size ring Heidi wore. I got excited, but didn't know. Well what kind of cut does she like was the next question. Unfortunately I didn't know this either. So I did the next best thing. I promised Dan I would find out and get back to him later that day.
When I met Evan at church he guessed I had some crazy news because I was grinning ear to ear. I told him and that I needed a plan. Well the entire service (sorry pastor) I brainstormed. At the end I had the idea to tell Heidi I had won a Riddle's Jewelry drawing for an engagement ring. I thought it sounded legit. Evan, Nick and my mom didn't think it was a great story. So back to brainstorming.... then I got it --- I was going to get engaged! Haha
Without checking with Evan (sorry babe), I googled engagement rings and took the first three, emailed them to Heidi, and wrote "Evan and I have been talking ....". Only after doing this deed did I decide to I texted Evan that I had just thrown him under the bus. Within a couple hours I got a phone call from Heidi. I thought I could easily ask Heidi what she would like and be done. Nope, I guess you need to try on rings to find the perfect one (thanks Trudy for that advice :)). Dan was going to have to wait a couple of weeks because, Uffda... Heidi and I planned to ring shop on September 25th in Sioux Falls. September 22
I had an eye appointment that day in SF. I decided I needed to forewarn the jewelry stores I was coming in and abut it really wasn't for me. Deceitful, yes. Brilliant, definitely! They were all aboard.
September 25
This was the big day. I seriously was having horrible issues with not freaking out. I went to Heidi's volleyball games at Tri-Valley, and than ring time! Honestly I do not know how people do it... pick out rings because there are tons and all are so different. Indecisive people should not ring shop. Anyways, Riddle's Jewelry on 41st and Louise was the first place. When we walked in (Heidi, I'm so sorry for acting ridiculous) I immediately started to talk about how I was going to get engaged at Christmas. It was going to be a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS to me. I said this so many times!! As we started to look at rings, I thought it would be great to try on the biggest rocks. So I did. As I told the lady - I only get engaged once so why not GO BIG or GO HOME. Haha, the lady thought I was crazy.
As we sifted through the rings, I finally distanced myself from Heidi and frantically told the clerk that Heidi was going to be engaged and not me! She laughed and started to pay more attention to her. Thank goodness because I started to have hot flashes and was a mess.

Towards the end of our Riddle's experience I was trying on a ring and Heidi took a picture of it and than sent it to Evan. Again, I had not planned for this. Not only did I have the biggest rock on my hand, Evan was with his brother and had to explain the story to him and why I had a ring on! So embarrassing! Therefore, since Heidi did that to me I did the same - took a picture and sent it to Dan. I told the Riddle's clerk she should probably call Evan and gave his number. Heidi didn't want to give Dan's right away, but since I gave Evan's she felt she should give Dan's. PERFECT! Right before walking out the lady measured our fingers. Of course, I didn't have a filter. We were the same size fingers, so I made a wisecrack remark that we could probably swap rings like fashion jewelry, but I would not be in for swapping significant others. The clerk just laughed and laughed.
We went to a couple more stores. At one point I remember Heidi asked if I wanted to look at wedding dresses. I about died. There was no way I could do that.... Now the wait was on. When I was driving back to Brookings I called Riddles to ensure they were not going to call Evan, but only Dan.
I really don't know how I lasted until Thanksgiving without saying anything to Heidi.
Here are some side stories that have evolved from this story:
- I had been congratulated by several people at SDSU on my 'engagement', which would make me quite flustered. For example, Dani (Heidi's really good friend) congratulated me after a swimming workout. I was so flustered that people knew that I made her pinky swear not to tell and said, 'listen here, it isn't me. It's someone else....I'm faking it. (wink, wink)'.
- Heidi had texted me several times asking how Evan and I were doing and of course I needed to make up some elaborate story on how it was going to be a MERRY CHRISTMAS because he was coming up to be with my family.
- On Hobo Days Heidi said that we probably should not run the San Diego marathon because I would be planning my wedding. I agreed and than asked her best friend Dani if she wanted to come to the wedding.
- And not only I have been congratulated, but Evan has too! I actually feel pretty bad that he had to go through some of this. Everything from texts, facebook messages, and teasing from his guy friends... and now his family knows this funny story. Oh boy, the impression of me I don't even want to know!
- Sorry Heidi for avoiding you for the past two weeks. I really could not contain my excitement!
- Finally, sorry Heidi for always crushing your dreams that you would get engaged anytime soon. I felt obligated :)
So once again - Welcome to the family Dan, and congrats to my wonderful, dear cousin Heidi!
